Attention all quilters! Create a quilt!
Conscience of the Human Spirit:
The Life of Nelson Mandela
This is a call for entries for a travelling exhibition organized by the Michigan State University Museum and The Women of Colour Quilters Network and Friends. The exhibition celebrates the sixty seven years Nelson Mandela served his country through public service, politics, prison, and the various funds and charities he championed. All quilts should represent some facet of Madiba’s life or his many contributions. 67 quilts will be selected.
The exhibition will premiere at the International Quilt Convention Africa in Johannesburg on July 25th – 27th, 2014. Thereafter it will travel in SA and to America, and perhaps to other venues willing to exhibit works about the great man. I am making a proposal to the Nelson Mandela Museum in Houghton, Johannesburg, that the exhibition be housed there on a permanent basis in the future.
As you know, copyright is always an issue, but according to the Museum, we may use anything, either pictorial or written that pertains to him, as long as we acknowledge the source. I must say that I would hesitate to use the drawings be made in prison, because they were so personal, but you may do what you will.
The size is 30 x 30 INCHES.
This is actually quite small so we should be able to manage by the end of MAY, 2014, which is the deadline.
You contribute more than one quilt if you wish.
Dr Mazloomi will jury the American pieces and Marsha MacDowell the south African works.
REQUIREMENTS
Please send your high-res image for consideration as well as an artist statement (up to 50 words) for each entry.
Entries will be accepted by email only.
Image quality is critical. They must be 300 ppi, 1800 pixels, JPG’s only.
Each image should be labelled: artist’s last name_quilt title.jpg
Submit one overall digital image and one detail digital image for each quilt.
The full image should include all outside edges of the work visible. Colour must represent the work accurately. Accepted works differing significantly from the digital image will be returned to the artist. Send images/statements to Marsha MacDowell at macdowell@msu.edu
