Bali Kaleidoscope from Hoffman

Those of you who have been to the guild meetings of about a year ago might remember that I went on somewhat of Kaleidoscope frenzy – I think I’m slightly over it now but when I saw that Hoffman fabrics just issued a free Bali Kaleidoscope pattern designed by Elisa Wilson, I just had to go take a look.  Is this not pretty?

The quilt measures 72” x 72” and the pattern even suggests which Hoffman Bali fabrics to use to get an exact replica.

Get your own free copy of this pattern right HERE.

Would love to see your version at our next guild meeting okay?

Organizing tote bag tutorial

Having been away for the long weekend I met a new friend and one of the topics of discussion was ‘successful packing’.  You know that feeling when you know you’ve packed your nail file or hair conditioner at the last minute but simply cannot find it.  Okay I pack things at home, not even on the last minute, and still cannot find it.  We made plans to ‘invent’ the perfect tote/bag enabling us to find anything we want the first time.  Everything was a possibility – fabric covered ice cream tubs, cutlery drawer in a pillowcase, you name it, we thought of it.  However......... the men convinced us that no matter what we have, we will still be looking for things, so we kinda made peace with it but I that does not keep me from checking out every new possibility and when I saw this organizing bag on the 2 little hooligans blog  I thought it might solve many a packing problem.

Find the full tutorial by clicking HERE and why yes, I’d love one for my birthday, thanks!!

Get to know Alta du Plessis

Yeah! another interview with one of our members.  I just love these as I often get to see the people at guild meetings but hardly ever get to know anyone on a more personal level.  Alta is a member of the 'Rafels' group.

Q:   In short tell us a little about your family:
A:  I have a kind hearted husband who respects my love of handwork and motivates me constantly.  He more than often has to take care of his meal himself.  Our 3 children are all married but at this stage we only have dog grandkids.

Reinart, our eldest, and his wife, Tachka, lives in Johannesburg.

Anke, our daughter and her husband, Van Zyl Oosthuizen, is renovating their tiny Cape Dutch house in George.  Our holidays by them usually end up in a major patchwork credit card bill.

Jané and her husband, Johan Welman, just moved back to Bloemfontein.

We have 2 dogs, Juliette, a realy lady and Ben my big bodyguard.

Q:  Are you a morning or night person?
A:  None of the two I’m equally misreble both times.  Late afternoon, early evening in the garden with my dogs and a little handwork is the best time of day for me.

Q:  Which do you prefer – sweet or salty snacks?
A:  Both

Q:  Do you collect anything and what?
A:  I find it hard to get rid of anything as I’m always thinking I might just need or use it in a project.  I like books, cans, blue bottels, pens, fabric, wool, buttons, beads, embroidery thread, ceramic tiles.  I am crazy about different textures even if it is only reddish grass, nice stones or seads.

Q:  If you could be any animal, what would you be?
A:  By now it must sound boring but one of the dogs in my house.

Q:  What is your favorite color?
A:  Red and purple and everything in between.

Q:  Do you believe in ghosts?
A: No

Q:  Do you have any other hobbies apart from quilting?
A:  Reading, writing, knitting, spin and music

Q:  Have you even been addicted to a computer/video game and which one?
A:  No I’d rather use that time to read or do handwork.

Q:  Name ONE bad habit you have and are aware of.
A:  I collect everything.

Q:  What do you regard as your best personality trait?
A:  I try my best to always be trustworthy

Q  Are you mostly a messy or clean person?
A:  Even though unorganized I would not describe myself as messy

Q:  If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A:  The Dutch countryside

Q:  What is your favorite drink?
A:  Coffee / Beer

Q:  What is your favorite gift to receive?
A:  a Book, fabric or a pretty single flower

Q:  Which type of gift do you like the least?
A:  a Huge bouquet that dies in 3 days – What a waste!

Q:  If you could change your name, what would it be?
A:  I think I’ll keep my name as I do believe people who change their names go through some or other identity crises.

Q:  Name one thing not many people know about you
A:  I am crazy about poetry and collects old and new poetry books.

Thanks Alta for answering all my annoying questions, I do appreciate it!

Choices, choices…………

Often when I visit a small town I think we, as city dwellers, miss out on the intimacy a small town has but the one thing I just love about the city is the choices we have.  You don’t have to buy what you want from the only supplier in town or you don’t have to go to the ONLY doctor in town and so forth and now on our blog we are giving you choices too.

Even though we still have very few of our ‘own people’ as FOLLOWERS (come on take a leap of faith and become a follower, just by following the instructions once you’ve clicked there), you now can follow us by adding your E-MAIL ADDRESS on the top right hand side of our blog and you will then be notified by e-mail of every new post that appears on our blog or you can add us as a FRIEND on FACEBOOK.

Just search for us as Oranje Quilters Guild and I’d love to add you as a FRIEND.  This way too you’ll see every new entry on our blog if you log onto your own Facebook account.

Photos from the Bloem Show

Having been out of town for a while I’ve not even had the opportunity to visit the Bloem Show and look at all the quilts entered and on display.  Luckily another diligent guild member, Frances van der Waltthought that we need to put these on our blog for the members who might not make it to the Show and mailed me these photos.  Thanks Frances!!

We also have a couple of hard working quilters who gave their time to sit at the Show and tell people more about the art of quilting giving live demonstrations.  Here Magriet Bester and Lulu Marais can be seen in action.
FLTR:  Magriet Bester & Lulu Marais

I’ll just have to create a time slot to get to the Show SOON!!

Free Perch quilt pattern

I have a house full of birds and even though they don’t stay in neat little birdhouses I still want to one day make a birdhouse quilt and maybe add a photo of each of my birds to every house.  Unfortunately these little feathered friends keep me rather busy and I don’t always get to quilt as much as I would like to having to take care of them but I’ve added this to my ‘one day’ list.  I saw this on the website of Timeless Treasures
