First General Meeting 2026

Plans for the first General Meeting 2026 is well underway with honorary guest Antoinette Kriel, the current President of the South African Quilt Guild (SAQG) who will be demonstrating the Boro stitch technique.  All the Quilt in Clarens 2026 quilts will be on display as well as the Sew Awareness 2026 Quilt Festival's quilts.  Do join us for this event.

Class description:

Learn more about this ancient Japanese stitching tradition by piecing, patching and stitching your own small piece which will then be made into a small pouch to take home and enjoyJ

(And if time allows, I will show you how to make boro bobbles too!)

Class duration:  2 x 3 hours (30 min lunch break)

Skill level:  All levels

Class type:  Handwork



Requirements:

1.     Fabric pieces:  ONLY 12 – 15 different pieces of soft cotton e.g. plaids/checks, solids, small dots/flowers (approx. 4” – 6” pieces) Perfect to use your scraps!

2.     Piece of base fabric, 6” x 11” in size.  (Something soft like muslin will work best)

3.     Fabric scissors

4.     Iron and ironing board (two or three for the class will suffice)

5.     Pins

6.     Basting thread

7.     Glue pen or fabric glue stick

8.     Thimble

9.     Needles for basting (e.g.  embroidery no 7/8) and stitching (e.g. chenille no 22/24)

10.  Thread for Boro stitching:  Perle no 8 or stranded embroidery thread in contrasting colour from your fabric and/or complimentary to your fabric. Keep in mind you want to see the stitches!

11.  Piece of backing fabric to match your choice of fabrics – it will form the lining of your pouch

12.   70cm ribbon/trim for closing the pouch OR 3 x ½” strips of fabric
