At our first management meeting for 2019, two very talented and innovative ladies, Nelia Venter and Marianne le Roux of our Guild proposed a quilt competition known as "Kwiltedoor". 3 members of the 8 participating groups in our Guild are to partake with one group being eliminated with every round. At the end of the competition, the completed quilt will be raffled for charity. The 3 participants of the winning group will each receive a weekend break away at
Aspen Guest House in the beautiful Eastern Free State.

The purpose of the competition is to see who is the most accurate, creative and ingenious group within our Guild with the main goal just to have fun and enjoy it in celebration of our 30th birthday.
The 8 participating groups in no particular order are:
|
Sterre: Gerda Cronje-Vermeulen, Marietjie Thomas and Petro van der Merwe
(from left to right)
|
|
Rotary Cutters: Marietjie van Rensburg, Rika van der Merwe and Magda du Plessis |

So with round one starting, the anxious quilters arrived armed with their exercise quilt squares, pre-arranged patterns, sewing machines and wildly beating hearts. With the wonderful sponsorship of
Jacksons for the fabric and
Pfaff for the batting, the competition kicked off.
Every participant had to make one traditional quilt block which was to be finished using the quilt-as-you-go technique within the allocated two hours.
It was rather unbelievable to see how the same fabric can create a completely different ambiance and all the blocks differed. The girls worked ingenious and soon the anxiety was replaced by the most wonderful atmosphere. One group did however tried their luck every now and again to the delight of everyone and became the spice of the day!
All of the groups finished in time and while Mariëtte and Iessie were busy judging the blocks, exotic lucky draws were handed out which included a dressed sheep, a romantic breakaway weekend and imported cutlery... Below are the lucky recipients with their "prizes"...
It was a wonderful learning experience for all present when the judges delivered their verdict as one could experience and see it first hand. Unfortunately, the Needles and Pins group was the first to leave the competition.
And this is the completed blocks.
It was one of the most enjoyable days ever in our Guilds history! Thanks to everybody for their outstanding attitude and co-operation. We will see you at the next round for innovative blocks.
